Reduce Fever Fast

If you have a baby who is younger than 6 months and has a fever of 101°F or more, seek immediate medical care.

Whenever trying to reduce fever quickly, two things are of prime importance - reducing the fever and preventing dehydration. Here are some remedies which work fast.

» Oral Medicines

One should always keep some medicines at home to treat fever. There are over-the-counter medicines available to treat fever in children and adults. Adults can take medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen, but give only the latter two medicines to children who are younger than 18 years. Oral medicines or remedies for babies are to be used only after consulting a pediatrician.

» Intake of Fluids

This is an excellent remedy, when you want to reduce fever in children naturally. During fever, a lot of water is lost from the body. Drinking water will keep the body hydrated, and help to bring the body temperature down. So, give the person suffering from fever, a lot of fluids. You can also give the person, fresh fruits like watermelon or cucumbers, these are nutritious, and have over 90% water content.

» Sponge Bath

Sponge baths are very effective to reduce fever in children and adults. Take off all the clothes of the patient, and sponge bath the whole body with lukewarm water. You can repeat this after 4 hours if required. Alternatively, you can try soaking cotton cloth strips in normal water, and placing them on the patient's forehead and feet. Remove the strips after two minutes, and repeat the whole process for 10 - 15 minutes, to reduce fever naturally.

» Applying Pads

Food items like egg whites, onions, potatoes, or garlic also help to reduce fever quickly. You can make pads from any of the mentioned food items using gauze bandage. Secure these pads around the feet of the person by wrapping gauze. If you are using garlic pads, smear some olive oil on the feet before using the pads, to prevent any irritation. You can use any of the mentioned food items, but egg whites work the best.

  • It is important to clothe the patient in lightweight clothing, so that the heat can escape easily from the whole body.
  • It is important that you never cover the head and feet of the person, as heat escapes from these two body parts first.
  • The patient should rest as much as possible, because movement increases the body temperature.
  • Keep a check on the fever of the person every few hours, with a thermometer. It is also important that you monitor the body temperature especially during the night.
  • You can keep a water bottle next to the patient, so that they keep drinking water, and stay hydrated.
