Causes of Hip Pain
The pain around the hip joint can be caused due to problem affecting the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, etc. Many times inflammation of the tissues leads to hip pain in women.
Hip Bursitis: Bursa is a fluid filled closed sac, which is used as a gliding surface, which helps in reducing friction between the tissues. There are two major bursae situated in the hip. If any one of the bursae are inflamed, it can cause stiffness and/or pain in the hip joint. Depending on which of the bursa is affected the symptoms may change. If the trochanteric bursa is affected, tenderness may be seen on the outer part of the hip, which often makes it difficult to sleep on the sides. The person may also find it difficult to walk or climb stairs. On the other hand if the ischial bursa is affected, the person may notice pain in the hip joint, while walking on an incline. The pain may also surface, when a person sits on hard surfaces for an extended period of time.
Arthritis: The cause of hip pain in women over 50 often may be related to arthritis. Many women are affected with osteoarthritis, which gives rise to hip bone pain. When osteoarthritis strikes, it often leads to wear and tear of the hip joint, which is a ball and socket joint. In most cases, the patient suffers from pain in the groin area, or stiffness and/or swelling in the joint. Some women may also suffer from pain in front of the thigh.
Tendinitis: One of the causes of hip pain in young women is tendinitis. In most cases, the condition is caused due to over use of the tendons located around the hip joint. Likewise, there are some activities, which can also be responsible for the condition. More often than not, inflammation is observed around the hip joint, which further leads to pain in the hip area.
Injury: Very often fracture caused to the hip joint is one of the causes of hip pain. This condition is majority of the times seen in elderly women. The fractures can be caused due to various reasons. One of the prominent reason is osteoarthritis. In some cases the fractures can also be caused due to stress placed on the said joint. In case of a fracture the pain often may be excruciating.
Polymyalgia Rheumatica: This is a condition, which affects both the hip joints. It is one of the causes of hip pain when walking. The symptoms of this condition are muscle pain along with stiffness in the hip joint. One of the most prominent symptom of this condition is aggravation of the condition in a matter of few days. This condition is often seen in elder people. Fatigue, unintentional weight loss, depression, etc. are some of the other symptoms of this condition.
Hernia: Hernia can also give rise to hip pain in women. There is anterior hip pain noticed in women suffering from femoral and inguinal hernia. Pregnant women are often prone to inguinal hernia, which is caused due to additional pressure placed on the abdominal muscles.
These were some of the causes of hip pain in women. The hip pain treatment depends on the causes of the condition. It is best not to self diagnose or self treat the condition. At the same time, it is not recommended that one ignores the condition, as it can have severe implications.
