Emu oil, which is derived from the body fat of the emu bird, has numerous uses. It is claimed to be an effective remedy for skin conditions, like stretch marks.
Natives to Australia, emus are flightless birds that are believed to have been living on the Earth, since the prehistoric times. It is said that the aborigines of Australia worshiped emus, but these birds are now raised as livestock, for their meat and oil. While emu meat is high in protein and low in cholesterol; the oil too has numerous uses, right from making cosmetics to machine lubricants. Emu oil contains linolenic acid, oleic acid, and sapogenins. With all these beneficial components, emu oil is found to be good for various cosmetic and medicinal uses. While vitamin A and E are good for repairing skin conditions, linolenic acid can alleviate pain and stiffness.
Oleic acid has anti-aging properties, and sapogenins softens skin. Emu oil contains terpines, that are antiseptic in nature. It is used for treating acne, sunburns, dry skin, eczema, fungal infections, insect bites, and burns. It is also said to be useful for preventing dandruff, thinning hair, and hair loss. This oil is said to be antiallergenic, non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), and non-greasy. In short, emu oil can be safely used for skin and hair care.
Emu Oil and Stretch Marks
Even though, stretch marks are mostly associated with pregnancy, the skin condition can also be caused by various other factors. In general, stretch marks are caused by excessive stretching of the skin. It can be caused by physical or hormonal factors. Physical factors include gaining of excess weight in a short period of time, as in case of pregnant women and body builders.
Excessive use of steroids and Cushing’s syndrome are examples for stretch marks caused through involvement of hormones. So, both men and women are prone to stretch marks. How to Use Emu Oil for Stretch Marks
It is claimed that emu oil can penetrate the deep layers of the skin, and stimulate growth of new cells, as it has essential fatty acids. Vitamin E in this oil repairs the skin and aids absorption of the oil into the skin. There are various emu oil products, like body lotion and emu bath oil. You may use any of these products for fading stretch marks. Emu oil lotion has to be applied after a shower or a bath. Rub the oil gently on the skin in circular motions, till it is absorbed.
After bath, the skin will be moist and soft, so that the oil will be absorbed quickly. Pure emu oil is a concentrated version, which has to be used in very small amounts. Two to three drops will be sufficient for application on the skin. Repeat it twice or thrice daily. You may also use emu bath oil, once a week, so as to heal the stretch marks. Add a few drops of this oil into the water, and soak in it for around ten minutes. Apart from healing stretch marks and scars, it can also relax tired muscles and stiff joints.
Try to get pure emu oil from reputed manufacturers. Even though, emu oil is said to be antiallergenic, it may cause allergic reactions in some people. So, go for a patch test, before use. If you develop such reactions, avoid using the oil.
