Swine flu is a serious health ailment, which is highly contagious. However, certain precautionary measures can help prevent the spread of this disease. The following article provides information about the various ways to prevent it.
Swine flu caused a global pandemic in the year 2009. It is basically a respiratory infection caused due to the H1N1 virus. Its symptoms are similar to that of seasonal flu. As the name suggests swine flu is the influenza which is seen in pigs, and it generally does not infect humans. But, the H1N1 strain has certain genetic factors that allow them to infect humans. This virus spreads quickly and easily, and hence, it can take the form of an epidemic. The disease, being contagious, can spread from one person to other. The H1N1 virus infects the respiratory tract, i.e. the nose, throat, and lungs. It can get transmitted from the infected person to a healthy person by water droplets while sneezing or physical contact.
Children and people with weak immune system are at increased risk of getting this disease. As aforementioned, the symptoms of this condition are similar to that of a seasonal influenza or flu. The symptoms include:
- Cough
- Body aches
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Sore throat
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Chills
If more than two of the above mentioned symptoms are observed, then one must consult a doctor immediately.
Prevention
Prevention of this condition is necessary to control its spread. If proper precautions are taken, one can easily stay away from this fatal disease. Given below are some of the ways to prevent swine flu.
Maintain Hygiene
Maintaining good hygiene is an important step to prevent this condition. Keep your hands clean, by washing them frequently. If it’s not possible to carry hand-wash all the time, then use a sanitizer. Since the virus enters the body through respiratory tract, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth regularly. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or a disposable tissue while sneezing and coughing.
Boost your Immunity
Consuming certain foods can help boost the immune system. Include lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet as they are rich in vitamin C. Include carrots in your diet, as they contain beta-carotene that helps fight infection. So, try to include these food items in your diet and stay healthy. Exercising is one more method to boost your immune system. Also, get good sleep, as this will help your body to fight infection.
Avoid Crowds
Since swine flu spreads easily, avoid going to public gatherings. Avoid direct contact with people and wash your hands whenever you come in contact with someone in public places.
Workplace Hygiene
Swine flu can easily spread in workplace due to frequent contact with each other. Hard surfaces that are used constantly like door knobs, work benches, etc. should be cleaned frequently. Employees should be instructed to follow the preventive measures strictly. Any employee who depicts signs of swine flu should take appropriate treatment. If swine flu is detected, he/she should take leave from work until he/she has recovered fully.
Wearing surgical masks may not help in preventing swine flu. But, it is recommended that people who are infected by this condition should wear high quality surgical masks. Isolation of such patients is one of the important steps in reducing the spread of this condition.
